Websites that aggregate stock analyst ratings often give stocks a score of 1-5. The weighting of the ratings is 1 for buy, 2 for outperform, 3 for hold, 4 for underperform and 5 for sell. If the average rating is close to 5, that means that most analysts rate the stock as a sell.

What is a Morningstar analyst rating?

The Analyst Rating is a qualitative, forward-looking rating that Morningstar's manager research analysts assign based on their assessment of People, Process, Parent, Performance, and Price. Unlike the star rating, the Analyst Rating aims to predict a fund's future risk-adjusted performance over a market cycle.

What does an analyst do?

Analysts are specialists within banking and financial systems that typically report for specific stocks or within defined sectors. These people research company financial statements, sit in conference calls and meetings, and speak with relevant insiders to determine what are known as analyst ratings for stocks.
